Question: Analyse the mise en scene in the “monarch of the glen clip”. How does it construct the representation of age?

Answer:

In the first scene we see a heard of grown men working with heavy and dangerous tools. From that first scene the representation of age is clear, because not only are the men working with dangerous tools but there are no children in site.  Also one was to look closely they would notice that there are two different types of adults their and there are those that are really old and those that are young adult (in their 30ths).  The young adult are shown moving faster than the older ones and doing more of the heavy lifting than the older ones. This another way in which the makers of the clip have tired to represent age.

We move on to the costume of the characters and we see that the adults are dressed in an older line of the fashion. The older characters are dressing in smart ready for work. The dressing is smart but not too smart showing he is serious but his job, but can also have fun doing it. Where as the youths are wearing casual and fashionable clothing.

The next scene that I analysed is where the girl is given a car and is asked to go into town to pick up a few supplies. Unaware of the resources the girls hesitates to start the car. Her body language at this point is that of a confused youth in an exam. 

If you take a look at the way that the youths room is and the adults office is, you would see that the makers of this clip have gone to great lengths to make sure that they have established the age difference. The adults office is made out of well polished wood, the office is laid out in a formal setting where you have one desk, one master chair, and 2or 3 others chairs for the guests. The fact that it has 2 or 3 other chairs shows that the room is not a place where a stamped of people can converse to have a bit of banter.  

On the other  hand the girls bed room is has a peach wall colour, pink bed sheets, a mirror with pink decorations hanging from it and a teddy bear.  This shows that the girl is still a has the mind set of a child because she feels that having the teddy bear with her when she sleeps will protect her from any bad situation that she is in.
